photo mania: Amish country 1/2 marathon

Amish excursions and a half marathon!

First we drove to the great state of Pennsylvania. 01-IMG_1096-001We stayed at a charming little home we found through AirBnB. Thanks for hosting us, Michael and Natasha!02-DSC03459-001We actually worked from “home” on Friday so didn’t do much exploring, but we did make a quick lunch stop for some pho! 03-DSC03465-001Who cares if it’s 90 degrees and sunny out? Hot spicy soup.

The expo was under a giant tent in farm land.05-DSC03472When you get a complimentary whoopie pie in your registration swag bag, you know it’s going to be a good race.06-DSC03474-001We went to Lancaster Brewing Company for dinner. Such a hip little spot in this small town!07-DSC03476-001The blackened chicken salad got an A+.
09-DSC03479Some pretzels for good measure.10-DSC03480-001This decision was 100% Anthony’s:11-DSC03482Uh oh.12-DSC03485-001And THEN it was race day!1-IMG_1099About 1,000 runners signed up for the race, which made it bigger than some of the other small races I’ve done, but still very community-like. The hot air balloons took off…

1-IMG_1101And then so did we!

The race was great. Lots of farmland plus quite a few rolling hills and a fair amount of “road apples” kept things interesting. Perfect weather, too.3-20130907_074028I felt pretty strong the whole time and tried to stick around a 7:30 pace.4-20130907_084250For once, I didn’t tank at the end and finished fast! And managed to squeak out a PR at 1:38:12! An average pace of exactly 7:30. I guess I learned something from having a coach after all.

Anthony ran the last mile with me AND cheered for me at different points in the course. And we wore matching tank tops.
3-IMG_1108The best part of the weekend was meeting the Amish community of Bird in Hand. They were incredibly kind and quietly cheered us on the whole way. The Amish factor made this race pretty unique!1-IMG_1107I hope you survived this mountain of photos. I need another whoopie pie.

  • Did you race this weekend?
  • Have you ever visited an Amish community?
  • Have you ever rode in a hot air balloon?!

Congrats on the PR! That sounds like a really fun and different race. You’ve inspired me to do more local, smaller races and take a break from the big crowds!
