I love a bit of friendly competition. Today’s matchup: Garmin GPS 210 vs. Nike+ Sportswatch GPS.IMG_0131Nike was awesome enough to give me their latest high-tech sportswatch as part of a thank you for helping coach their Nike Women’s Half Marathon training group. I was really excited to take it out for a test run today!

Still, I was a bit skeptical about how good it could be. Garmin is generally considered the best of the best when it comes to GPS running watches so I didn’t think the matchup would be very close.

IMG_0132I kept both watches running the entire time (i.e., I didn’t pause them at stop lights) to make the test most fair. I’m really glad I had this little event on the agenda for this morning because it was about 30 degrees with 15 mph winds, so I probably wouldn’t have gotten out of bed otherwise.IMG_0135The results: Pretty close! Here are my notes from my 6 mile run:

  • Garmin calculated .05 miles more than Nike (6.05 vs. 6.00)
  • Garmin’s average pace was 0:02 faster than Nike (9:01 vs. 9:03) (remember, I kept both watches running while at stoplights etc.)
  • Garmin’s satellites loaded about 1 minute faster than Nike

Which watch is more accurate? I don’t know, and I don’t know if I’ll ever know. With such close results, I’d say they’re both pretty darn good and if I could go back in time and buy one, I might buy Nike because it’s $90 cheaper. But… I can’t say for sure yet, because I haven’t played around with other functions on the watch. To be continued!

There’s more competition, though. On Saturday night, Anthony and I headed Board Room, a new-ish bar in Dupont Circle. We loved the fun theme of the place, which stocks 100+ board games for people to play while they drink. In addition to a ton of games, this place also has a lot of beer — on tap, and by the bottle.

DSC02685My only criticism: Don’t come on a Saturday night. The place was absolutely PACKED.

But we loved that Board Room (which does not serve food) allows people to order food or bring their own snacks to the bar! Since Anthony and I gave up going out to eat for Lent, we’ll likely pack some sandwiches and come back 🙂

On Saturday, though, Catherine and company had BYOC! CAKE!DSC02686Catherine turned 29 or 9, depending on whether she decides to count her leap year birthday or not!

  • Favorite board game?
  • What type of running watch do you have?
  • Are you competitive?

I love that you did this!
My favorite board game is Scattegories and I wear a Garmin 10 right now. I have a 305 that I’m in love with but my husband bought me the 10 for Christmas this year so I’m giving it a try.

I love my Garmin! I’ve heard mixed reviews about various Nike watches, but the Nike Women’s running series has a lot of great tie-ins with those products.
