i’m no grouchy pants

When you’re feeling chilly (thanks, 35-degree temps and 22-mph winds), it’s time to make chili._DSC0627-001

Anthony and I threw the following together in a pot last night and let it simmer for about half an hour: An onion, two green peppers, one orange pepper, a jalepeno pepper, two cans of beans, a can of tomato soup, 1.5 lbs of lean ground beef, and two cans of diced tomatoes. Spices: cumin, chili powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper (a dash of paprika and cinnamon helps, too!)._DSC0628-001

Though we miss my mom’s home cooking, we still really enjoyed it. Especially when paired with a mountain of cheese and an episode of Modern Family.

It was the perfect meal after an extremely windy night run. I don’t enjoy running after work very much, but if I get less than 6 hours of sleep the night before I typically will nix my morning jog for an evening run (or no run at all) instead.IMG_0064

Adequate sleep is essential for runners, because your body releases human growth hormone (HGH) during your snooze. This hormone helps repair and grow muscle tissue and bones and acts as a “catalyst for the body to use fat as fuel,” says Runner’s World. The article says that people who don’t get enough sleep often also have bad eating habits and are stressed… aka, they are grouchy pants.

Luckily I listened to my Rihanna Pandora station the whole time which kept my spirits up.IMG_0063This morning the cold was even worse than last night. There was a whopping Workout of the Day ready at CrossFit so Anthony and I got our game faces on for fun. And foam rolling.IMG_0068I’ve never owned a foam roller, but I think I might have to agree with 99.999% of runners who say they’re the best thing ever (after chili and sleep, of course).

Back into the cold I go!

  • What kind of chili do you like? (spicy? sweet? smoky? beef? turkey? veggie?!!)
  • Foam rollers: thoughts.
  • Do you prefer morning or evening runs?

  1. We also had chili in my house last night…and luckily i have plenty of leftovers for the bitter cold of today! I LOVE LOVE LOVE my foam roller. I am not as consistent with it as I should be, but when I get in a regular pattern my runs feel much easier and I have far fewer joint aches and pains.
