I have been awake since an ungodly hour. When I woke up, the streets were pitch black, cold, and empty. So I played it nice, safe, and warm with a jog on the treadmill.

My incredible roommate actually wakes up at this hour on a regular basis and hit the gym with me. We were pretty much the only two crazies in there. Thanks for taking this glam shot, Daniela!

How to not get bored on the treadmill = run so fast you don’t have time to think. I did a tempo-like run, where I took the first and last mile easy (9-ish minute miles), and the middle 3 hard (7-ish minute miles).

Tempo runs are good for you because they basically increase the point at which your muscles begin to fatigue. AKA they challenge you to become faster and stronger. This Runner’s World article discusses the science of tempo runs — with a neat explanation by a 2:46 marathoner who is also an exercise scientist — which focuses on using oxygen more efficiently. The more you can train your muscles to not use up all your reserves at a certain exertion point, the better!

Tempo runs are better, but this granola is the best.

Apart from being pretty healthy (as far as granolas go, at least), it is freaking delicious. If you’re a big cinnamon/pumpkin lover, I would recommend it.

That’s all the advice I have for you today. I’m off to work… and then, off to TENNESEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeEEE!!

  • Favorite granola?
  • Have you ever done a tempo workout?
  • Do you prefer the treadmill or outside?

  1. That picture of you is so cute! I used to do tempo runs when I was racing a lot. I prefer outdoor running but am ol with treadmill too! Better than nothing for sure. Have a great time in TN!

  2. I am not a fan of granola. I try to eat it from time-to-time because it’s supposed to be so healthy and yummy but it just doesn’t work for me. I’d rather some brown rice with vegies or steamed sweet potato for breakfast – weird hey.

I haven’t done a tempo workout in a long time and am probably still a few months off doing my next one.

It never gets so cold we can’t run outside here in Brisbane, Australia so I always run outdoors. I think I’d go crazy living somewhere cold because I can’t imagine running on a tready. I admire all those who can keep running when the weather is so bad you need to run indoors.
